Love little boys...

At a basketball game for child #3, the girls were looking for something to keep them entertained (because supporting your brother is apparently "boring"!).
Well they found their entertainment in "Yoda", a family friend.
All of my children love this little guy so much I even contemplated having another child (for about 5 seconds).

Love this kid!!

What's wrong with this picture?

Besides the fact you are looking at two great looking kids, there is something wrong with this scene.
You may need to enlarge the photo...

Well, as we discovered after the Sunday evening fireside we attended was complete, Benjamin's pants are on backwards!!!
Completely buttoned and zipped, with a belt, but backwards!
What a good sport to let was photograph this and post it, per his father's request.

6th Grade Valentine's Dance

Monday, February 14th, 2011
My beautiful "little" girl!
Schools across Utah teach dance to their students (a lost art, in my humble opinion!) and many have a way of showing off what they've taught.  At our previous school a nightly performance with dances, singing, and poetry was presented.  At our current school a dance for the students is held on Valentine's day and parents are invited to watch and participate.
The gym was decorated with art projects and finished of by the "decorating committee".
As the hour progressed different dances were called out (waltz, jitter bug. etc.) and labeled either, "boy asks girl" or vise versa.  On occasion parental involvement was encouraged.
Proud Papa!
 Oo, la, la!
They performed line dances as well.
I have honestly never enjoyed a school activity more!
What a great way to teach children tradition, culture, manners, and social skills, all while having fun!!

Pre-Valentine's Day

In the middle of a Kitchen Makeover, Valentine's Day came along!
In our home St. Patrick's day is slightly more romantic than Valentine's, but I try to make it fun for the kids.  We have a special dinner where each member of the family receives a box of chocolates as dessert.  The cartoon or phrase on the cover often plays a bigger role in the selection of such treat, even more than the actual contents.
I will say this is the only time chocolate quality is compromised for the sake of cuteness!
Valentine's day was to fall on Monday and our cabinet painter was scheduled to spray, noxious fumes and all, so we celebrated early.
On Sunday we have a constant dinner guest.  His name is Brian and we enjoy his company and different view of life.  With the family, plus one, I continued the traditions, modifying them upon necessity; dinner at the counter instead of the table, one more box of chocolates, and a little less decor.
Once Brian accepted the short chair at the counter, he devoured his quiche and we all had a fun time.
On Valentine's day we had to leave the house during painting so the kids chose Chuck-o-Rama for our "romantic" meal and "Tangled" at the movie theater.
It turned out to be a very special couple of days.

Brace Faces

On January 26 both Glen and I signed over our left kidneys to cover the cost of braces for these two!
In all honestly we are blessed to have insurance and the means to fund such an adventure, but not happily.
I will say I've learned much about an HSA and how to use it though!
 The Before pictures:
The During...
And the After shot of one.
I think we were in such a hurry to get out of there we forgot the other child's after picture.
She chose Blue and White to support our Cougars in a basketball game that evening.
A few days later, they're still smiling!

Parental Date #2

Wonder Child #2!
We took the little missy to Texas Roadhouse for her "Parental Date".  She won the award for walking so many laps at our school Walk-a-Thon.
Another great kid!!

Dirty Clothes

The US Postal Service redeemed!
On our return to the mainland the first part of our flight was handled by Hawaiian Airlines and they have a 25 pound limit for carry-on luggage, even if it fits the dimensions.  Our luggage weighed more than that coming to the Big Island so we knew we were in trouble getting treats home.
In answer to this dilemma we went to the post office and filled two of their large "flat rate" boxes with our dirty clothes, as well as an envelope full of heavy books, sent by cheap media mail, all for under $35.
We arrived home Wednesday and our clothes came Saturday, not bad!

Hawaii - Part Two

Our Hawaiian adventures continued after a stressful trip to the airport.
Note to self and others:  When planning a relaxing trip to Hawaii, pick one island and stay there, because any peace and sense of calm you gain by sitting in the sun, listening to the waves, etc. will flee instantly upon arrival at the airport!
In our case we were on Maui for business and had never visited the Big Island so we added that to our itinerary.
After spending most of Saturday (one of our sunny days) in an airport we were happy to catch this beautiful sunset and check into our new hotel, the Hilton Waikoloa Village.
This place is huge!  It consists of the three hotel buildings, other outlying buildings, golf course, several pools, a protected lagoon and pools with dolphins.  That said, we spent very little time there.  We only had three days and one was a Sunday, so our activities were limited.  The lush green grass and plantings are a major contrast to the miles of black volcanic ground we passed on our drive from the airport.

On Sunday we located a ward through LDS.org and made the hour drive.  Each talk began with a friendly "Aloha" and carried the theme of Family History that day.  I found it rather ironic to be in Hawaii being reminded of the importance of family history work since much of mine remains hidden there.
Lets just say, my heart was touched!
One of the funniest things to me, was parking on the grass.  When we arrived, as the second ward in progress, the parking lot was full. So we followed another member around the building and found the only remaining place, the grass.

That night I did as the locals (more likely fellow tourist do) and placed "graffiti" on the beach, lava rock style. The beaches are covered in white coral remnants and the black lava rock makes a great contrast. Along the roadways people bring the white coral to "graffiti" upon the black lava mounds. I started with Glen's name and he came along and helped me add mine.

Below are some pictures I took of the beautiful surroundings at our hotel.  It really was on a magnificent piece of land!

On Monday I talked Glen into a trip to the Mauna Kea Observatory.  The weather wasn't the best, so laying out by the pool wasn't an option.  This turned out to be one of his favorite experiences!
After a two plus hour drive, the latter portion on very steep, gravel roads (4 wheel drive recommended, but obviously not mandatory, as proved by our Toyota Camry rental), we reached the top.  Driving above the gloomy cloud cover.
Home to thirteen telescopes funded by eleven countries, it does indeed provide an amazing view!
Standing 13,796 ft above sea level, its peak is the highest point in the state of Hawaii. However, much of the mountain is under water; when measured from its oceanic base, Mauna Kea is over 33,000 ft tall, much taller than even Mount Everest.
There was indeed snow on the ground and Glen's only regret was that he had no skis.  He wanted so badly to say he skied Hawaii, as a sweatshirt he owned in youth claimed.
At this height the oxygen to the brain was running a little low!

We arrived in typical Hawaiian gear, shorts and t-shirts, but prepared as best we could by taking anything "warm" we had packed.   After putting on my jeans, thin sweatshirt, windbreaker, and socks for my hands I still could only stand outside for minutes at a time.  The car said it was 36 degrees Fahrenheit, but the wind chill had to of brought it down to single digits or lower. I don't remember ever being that cold!

On our final day we made arrangements to take a helicopter flight over Kilauea and the surrounding area.  Personally, it didn't matter what we saw, I was just excited to be in a helicopter, and it did not disappoint!  We chartered our flight through Blue Hawaii at the Hilo airport.
On our trip we saw "Jack's Lava House", a little activity in the cone of the volcano and several lava flows around its base.  My favorite parts were take off and landing!
Overall it was a great trip!  Our children were well cared for by a newlywed couple we adore and we had some time to ourselves. Between the suns disappearance and our various adventures we didn't bring back the souvenir tan, but many great memories instead.
We have been to the four major islands, most several times, so I think we might be done island hopping, but we do hope to take the children to Kauai someday to visit the graves of their ancestors.
Aloha, Hawaii!

Hawaii- Part One

December 22nd was our 15th wedding anniversary and we knew we wanted to do something special, but who can leave their children three days before Christmas? So we planned to celebrate in January after the holiday festivities wound down. As it turned out a trip to Hawaii was awarded Glen by GE and the dates were predetermined, so off we went January 10th. With some clever planning by Glen we were able to cover major expenses, like travel and hotel through business and additional perks and rewards from frequent travel.
From the 11th to the 15th we were on the island of Maui for Glens business obligations and then we extended for three more days on the Big Island.

Upon our arrival to the Hilton's Grand Wailea we were given these beautiful leis.
Grand Wailea Resort and Spa Picture • Call Hawaii Connection at 1-800-351-1330 or 1-818-879-5665
This hotel is one of the most fantastic places I've seen.  It includes a fabulous spa, seven pools (many of which are connected by water slides), with a lazy river and the worlds only water elevator, beautiful views, and access to the 1.5 mile walking path along the beach.
While Glen "worked" I walked/jogged the 3 mile round trip path along the beach, read in undisturbed peace and quiet, and explored the resort.
This view from our room greeted us each morning (3:00am for me until by the fourth day when I started to adjust to the time change).

After Glen put in his time the first day we took off with our "Garmin" looking for some good food to eat.  Little did we know that when we happened upon a humbly named restaurant, "Mama's Fish House", we would be in for the best food of our lives!  The name may be humble, but the prices are not, however it was worth every penny to eat the Stuffed Mahi Mahi (stuffed with lobster and crab, encrusted with macadamia nuts) and Black Pearl Dessert (chocolate mouse confection with tuile cookies and passion fruit sauce)!
Insanely Good!!
On the next day we took a road trip!  We bought a simple picnic lunch in Paia and drove the 52 plus miles of curvy, narrow road to the tiny town of Hana.  It was quite beautiful, but I felt like I was on the longest, most horrendous roller coaster of my life!  It has been years since I've experienced car sickness, but this brought it all back!!
When we stopped for lunch we were greeted by the locals, in this case, cats and chickens.
This cat had the greenest eyes I'd ever seen.  And although I find rooster annoying, I also think they are beautiful.  This big guy ruled the roost (the park), chickens and cats alike.

We stopped a couple of times to get a closer look at water falls and highlighted view points.

This park had a beautiful cave system with tragic stories of a murdered princesses and a small secluded black beach.

This is one of Glen's artistic shots...
Because of restaurant reservations we had to turn back before we reached the "end", but I don't think I could manage this trip again to see what I missed.  It will forever be a mystery!
As we drove we listened to a CD sold by the locals that gives a bit of history and information on the native and imported flowers and trees.
These cows on the Hana Ranch have to be the luckiest beef on earth!  Their days may be numbered, but they live the good life with free roaming on ocean front property!
The sun didn't shine much on our visit, a little bit here and there, with a major rain storm covering a couple of days, but the warm temperatures were still a nice reprieve from our snow covered Utah.
This beautiful tree has multi colored bark and for obvious reasons is called, rainbow eucalyptus.  It is so beautiful in real life I'd think it was fake if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes.
Finally our time came to move on and say farewell to Maui.  On our final day as Glen cleaned up the GE booth I spent the morning in the spa.  What a fabulous treat!
I sat in the relaxing salt and clay infused waters hoping for the miracles each ingredient claimed to posses. After an hour there I was blessed with a hour massage that was so soothing and relaxing I never wanted to get up.
Glen captured the moment of final departure as I purchased my lunch to go, an $11 Chinese chicken salad, and that was at the cheep place!
We had a lovely time there and looked forward to our Big Island adventures.
